Stopping cars is always a dangerous task and chase between police and absconder unfortunately often ends with high collateral damage.
Conventional vehicle stopping techniques make use of nonflexible mechanical options or brutal force by impact driving with police cars. Those have to be prepared logistically and need various action forces. In addition impact driving is an imminent danger to life and health of police men and individuals in the target vehicles.
In the last years High Power ElectroMagnetics (HPEM) Systems have shown the ability of non-lethal attack against electronic systems used to support police and special-forces respectively military operations.
HPEM is a very strong radio frequency pulse transmitter which is able to disrupt electronic systems with the effect of no longer being able to fulfil its function.
Therefore the deployment of HPEM based systems for stopping vehicles represents a modern and additional ability for police and military task forces.
The CarStop system uses a radio frequency high power pulse transmitter which is able to disturb the electronic of vehicle motor controls in close range. The system is therefore able to switch off the motor of driving overtaking target vehicles in save distance even at speed above 150km/h, where the use of mechanical means or body impact to the target car is almost impossible.
- Use of the HPEMcarStop
The HPEMcarStop is designed for mobile applications where the location of the car stopping scenario is not known in advance.
Moving and standing cars with running motor can be stopped by switching of the motor without mechanical means when the front body of target vehicle is more than 1-2 seconds in the close transmitter beam.
To do this the HPEM-Effector is able to induce voltage spikes in all sensors and electronics of the motor control which leads to massive failures in the motor control software.
The motor control system is therefore no longer able to control the motor and will switch it off.
Stopping overtaking cars at high speed:
The HPEMcarStop is able to stop driving cars which are approaching from the back even with high speed (proven up to 200 km/h).
The driver of the HPEMcarStop has to keep the target vehicle in a distance of approximately 5m at the driver side for 1-2 seconds.
If the target car is for 1-2 seconds in the antenna pattern the HPEM-Transmitter is able to switch off the motor and the target vehicle will roll out.
This provides several possibilities to use the HPEMcarStop in dynamic scenarios.
- After Check-Points to stop escaping cars.
- Stopping vehicles at roadpatrols
- Even overtaking of suspicious vehicles is possible due to undercover design
- Protect VIP convoys being overtaken
The HPEMcarStop can also be used to block waiting cars without being recognized.
The driver only needs to ensure that the target vehicle is 1-2 seconds in the close antenna beam. E.g. slowly pass the target or stand close to the target front.
The Central Command Unit (CCU) provides the driver with switches for the functions arming, disarming and FIRE. No adjustment for different target vehicle must be done. Just FIRE.
The Driver Information System (DIS) provides the driver with all information necessary to run the HPEM-Effector.
The HPEMcarStop generates strong radio frequency which was matter to safety investigations.
Independent external medical and biological effects assessment done by German research institute showed that HPEMcarStop pulses are conform with national and international regulations.
