In order to clear unexploded ordnance (UXO) from the Second World War that are still present in the North and Baltic Seas and which continue to pose a huge threat to the sea lanes or to destroy modern sea mines, very effective clearing charges are required.
They must be functional at greater depths and are limited to comparatively small explosive charges for safety and handling reasons. Modern sea mines are filled with extremely insensitive explosive material which can only be brought to detonation by applying a very high energy density to the target.
With the help of shaped charge warheads or directed shock waves it is possible to destroy UXO or sea mines safely by a mine clearing team. These physical effects are independent of water depth and can therefore also be used for mine clearing in deep ocean waters. The mine clearing charge as well as the warhead of the sea mine clearing system "Seefox" are manufactured by Dynamit Nobel Defence and have been successfully used in the ATLAS mine clearing system by Navies of many nations.
