Raytheon ELCAN, as an RTX subsidiary in Canada, is a market leader in providing high-precision optical systems that meet strict military and commercial specifications, Raytheon ELCAN offers superior design and engineering capabilities, proprietary production technologies and fully integrated manufacturing to provide custom, turn-key solutions including weapon guidance and seekers, cockpit avionics, infrared search & track and countermeasures, high energy laser optics, space ISR and targeting systems including ELCAN Specter sights.
Raytheon ELCAN designs, engineers, manufactures tests and delivers complex opto-mechanical assemblies across the spectrum from visible through to long wave infrared – in any domain and against any challenge.
Raytheon ELCAN’s facility is located in Midland, Ontario, Canada, approximately 150km north of Toronto and represents the largest private sector employer in the area. Our two facilities in Midland have a combined space of 21,832 m2 (235,000 sqft) to allow us vertical integration from design and engineering to sourcing all the way to the manufacturing, assembly and testing across a wide range of volumes.
Raytheon ELCAN has manufacturing experience and expertise in mechanical fabrication, optical fabrication, thin film coating, and assembly and testing. Mechanical fabrication includes in-house capabilities in CNC machining, electrical discharge machining, prototyping and diamond machining. Surface treatment capabilities for mechanical components include electroplating, anodizing, conversion coating and electroless plating.
Optical fabrication capabilities allow us to design and manufacture systems that can include reflective and refractive elements including spherical and aspherical lenses, freeforms, cylinders, prisms, windows and domes (including hyperhemisphical domes). This capability spans across a wide range of materials and for a wide range of sizes. Our thin film capabilities allow coatings for visible, NIR, MWIR and LWIR. We also have design and manufacture capabilities for multi-band coatings, pass band and narrow band filter designs as well as ultra-low reflective coatings.
Our environmental testing capabilities allow us to test for a wide range of environments including temperatures, shocks, humidity, water immersion and vibration. Additionally, temperature and humidity can be tested simultaneously as can temperature and altitude.
Vertical Integration Advantage
ELCAN’s greatest advantage is our ability to start the process with raw materials, produce optics and mechanics with control at each stage, and deliver a fully tested opto-mechanical assembly.
Using High Energy Laser Optics as an example, the key to surviving high energy laser irradiation is to control the defects at each stage of the optics production. This starts with the bulk material, sub-surface damage caused by optical processing, surface quality, coating efficiency and finally contamination. Since ELCAN controls each of these steps, with strict process control and all operations under one roof, we are able to produce optics with high laser induced damage thresholds.
Many of the other markets we serve also benefit from Vertical Integration. Once again, having optical and mechanical operations under one roof allows ELCAN to optimize design for manufacture trade-offs, putting the precision where required and in a cost-effective manner.
Raytheon ELCAN designs, manufactures and delivers smart EOIR systems to defeat tomorrow’s threats today in the harshest conditions across air, land, sea and space.
